The history of IEC
The university has been leading its history since 1957, when the first group of students for the specialty "Industrial and civil engineering" was admitted to the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute. In 1961, an enrollment was carried out for the specialty "Architecture" and the corresponding departments were formed: construction, architecture and sanitary-technical. In 1980, on the basis of these departments and the Alma-Ata branch of the All-Union Correspondence Engineering and Construction Institute, the Alma-Ata Institute of Architecture and Construction (AIAC) was opened.
The first rector of the AIAC was an experienced organizer, a large industrial worker, a builder, Doctor of Technical Sciences Serekpek Mukashevich Baibolov.
In 1987 Pavel Aleksandrovich Atrushkevich became the rector of AIAC. In 1991 under his leadership, the institute was the first certified and accredited among the universities of Kazakhstan. In 1992, AIAC was renamed the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (KazGASA).
In 2000, Kussainov Amirlan Aidarbekovich was appointed as a rector. Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Full Member of the American Society of Engineers and Builders and the International Association for Soil Mechanics, Footing and Foundation Engineering, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Academician of the International Engineering Academy, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences (RAASN) - scientist, teacher, innovator. In 2001, the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering was renamed into the Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (KazGASA).
KazGASA is a leading university in Kazakhstan, a recognized scientific and educational center in the Central Asian region, one of the first to go through all the stages of introducing a credit education system. For the first time among the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Board of Trustees, the Council of Customers and expert commissions for specialties, the laboratory of educational studies, the Association of Graduates of Architectural and Construction Specialties (AGACS), etc.
AIAC-KazGASA is the first specialized university in the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of architecture and construction and until now as a basic methodological center has a huge impact on the development of educational programs in Kazakhstan.
In 2007, the specialty "Architecture" was certified in UNESCO-UIA (confirmation in 2011). Since 2009, under the chairmanship of KazGASA, International Festivals of architectural and construction schools of Eurasia have been regularly held.
Kazakh-American University (KAU) – was founded on the basis of a synthesis of programs of American and Kazakh universities under articulation contracts, with the aim of teaching undergraduate in English. The idea belonged to the founder of the university - Amirlan Aidarbekovich Kusainov. September 12, 1997 - the date of the university foundation.
KAU was a unique institution that synthesized the best traditions of the Soviet and American educational systems. Since the founding of KAU, elements of the credit system were present in the educational process. The experience of the Kazakh-American University was taken into account when drawing up the Rules for the credit system of education, approved by the order of the Ministry of Education and Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2005. KAU is the first university to introduce the so-called "comments" - monthly reports of teachers on the progress and behavior of a student for his/her parents. At the same time, they began to conduct Feedback - a survey of students about the quality of each teacher's classes. KAU actively introduced new systemic, technological, managerial and social programs. Since 1997, the university, one of the first among the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has introduced the process of separating student learning and monitoring (assessing) their knowledge; multi-point letter system of the level of training; an innovative wage system; Hand-outs (active handouts); the concept of trilingualism in teaching; universal criteria for a comprehensive assessment of language proficiency; trilingual glossary; defense of graduation projects (works) in English.
The Kazakh leading Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (KazGASA, founded in 1980) and the Kazakh-American University (KAU, founded in 1997) in 2007 established the International Educational Corporation in the form of a university as a single educational, scientific and industrial complex, uniting educational, scientific, industrial and other divisions with the status of a legal entity (the Charter was approved by the decision of the general meeting of the founders of the IEC by protocol No. 1 of 07.12.2006).
In July 2009, in the process of reorganization, the IEC was registered in the Department of Justice of Almaty as a Joint Stock Company (certificate of state registration 98672-1910-JSC dated July 02, 2009). In 2014, the IEC successfully passed the State certification for the right to conduct educational activities for a period of 5 years (order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 19, 2014 No. 1894) in 16 specialties of higher education (bachelor's degree), 9 specialties of master’s degree, 5 specialties doctoral studies(PhD course). In 2015, institutional and specialized accreditation at the Independent Kazakh Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IQAA).
In 2017, the 20th anniversary of the opening of KAU and the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Department of Design were celebrated. In 2018, on the basis of the IEC, an anniversary meeting of the Educational and Methodological Association of the Republican Educational and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (UMO RUMS MES RK) was held in the field of architecture, construction and design profiles - 30 years in the USSR and 25 years in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2019, according to the results of the rating of educational programs of universities of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Atameken", the IEC takes leading positions in 8 educational programs.
In August 2019, the IEC was transformed into the Limited Liability Partnership “International Educational Corporation”. Currently, the educational activities of the university are carried out on the basis of license No. KZ72LAA00017335 dated 01.11.2019, issued by the Committee for Control in Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Today the IEC:
- a multidisciplinary university that implements training in 10 areas of undergraduate studies (32 educational programs), 4 areas of master's degree (9 educational programs) and 3 areas of doctoral studies (6 educational programs);
- a large specialized university in the field of architecture and civil engineering in Kazakhstan, heading the UMO on its basis and coordinating the work of departments and chairs in 41 universities in Kazakhstan;
- the first university in the world to be accredited by the UNESCO-UIA commission;
- the first university in Kazakhstan to introduce a credit education system;
- has a highly qualified teaching staff, most of whom are professors, recognized researchers and specialists, founders of research schools and authors of many publications and monographs;
- has a Dissertation Council for the defense of PhD theses.
In 2020, the anniversary of the opening of AIAC-KazGASA is 40 years old.
The university includes 8 departments, which are staffed by teachers who have academic degrees of Doctor of Science, Candidate of Science, Doctorate of PhD and practical work experience that meet the qualification requirements. There is a system of reserves for filling vacancies, which has high requirements for applicants.
The main direction of research activities is participation in solving the main problems of fundamental science, as well as priority areas of industrial and innovative policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The studies are in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and are focused on the development and creation of potentially competitive, including export-oriented industries operating in non-resource sectors of the economy.
The university is continuously working to expand international relations, agreements on cooperation in the field of education and science have been concluded with foreign universities from Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Israel, Japan, USA, Kingdom of the Netherlands, UAE, South Korea, China, Hungary, Czech Republic , Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey and the CIS countries. The IEC has cooperation agreements with 100 leading foreign universities.
The IEC introduced staff units for the leaders of student youth - employees of the Student Youth Committee and the Student Adaptation Service. Annually out of its own funds, internal scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis for gifted students from low-income families. The institute of advisers works. Accommodation in the Students' House is free. There are interest clubs and sports sections.
The University has a modern material and technical base that meets the requirements of sanitary norms and the requirements of state general education standards for the specialties being implemented, which includes: the main educational building (GUK); administrative building (AUK), main administrative building (GAK); 2 sports halls with a total area; multifunctional sports ground, tennis court with a total area; dormitory - Students' House (SH).
